Nonprofits that include direct mail as part of their communication strategy will want to factor pending postal rate increases into the budgeting process. This represents the first increase under the new pricing system that is pegged to inflation. While this approach permits annual increases, it also caps them at the current rate of inflation. The current CPI-U (Consumer Price Index for All Urban consumers) was 2.9%. The new rates will be effective May 12, 2008.

• Standard nonprofit regular letters will increase 0.8%
• Standard nonprofit ECR (enhanced carrier route) will increase 2.2%
• Nonprofit periodicals will increase 2.71%
• Nonprofit standard regular parcels and Non-Flat Machinable (NFM) will increase 7.6%
